Due to the tremendous stresses encountered during regular use, the door has been the focus of extensive research and development. American Autoclave Company's breach lock mechanism allows for fast lock and unlocking action while retaining a consistent airtight seal. This is achieved by a pneumatic gasket, as pressure in the autoclave increases the gasket actually grows tighter. This gasket will maintain clearance between the shell ring and the door ring, each ring is machined out of solid steel, . It also eliminates the need for wedges which are subject to galling and sticking. The door itself is mounted on heavy duty roller bearings, if necessary of desirable a hydraulic system can be provided to assist in its operation.
